The Islamic (Hijri) date today is displayed above, together with the corresponding Gregorian date. The date updates automatically every day — you never need to refresh the page or do any calculation yourself. Also shown: which day of the Hijri month it is, and how many days remain in the month.
Note: shown per the tabular (calculated) Islamic calendar. The observed date in your country may differ by ±1 day depending on moon sighting.
How the Hijri date is determined
The Islamic calendar is lunar: each month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon (hilal). A Hijri month lasts 29 or 30 days, and the year has 12 months — 354 days in a common year, 355 in a leap year. Unlike the Gregorian day, which changes at midnight, the Islamic day begins at sunset (Maghrib), so the Hijri date changes in the evening, not at 12 AM.
Why the date can differ between countries
Because months begin with the physical sighting of the moon, cloudy weather or geographic position can shift the start of a month by a day between countries. This page shows the calculated (tabular) date, which may differ by ±1 day from the officially announced date in your country. For fasting, Eid, and other observances, always follow your local moon-sighting announcement.
